Symposium Themes and formats

Themes

The symposium focuses on artistic and creative methods (1) mobilized for the conduct of innovative research and the co-production of knowledge; (2) envisaged to enhance and disseminate scientific knowledge.

1. Artistic and creative methods for conducting research

The objective is to discuss the motivations, interests but also the limits related to artistic approaches to conducting a research process. Researchers and practitioners can present unconventional ways of doing research and show the results of their experience. Particular attention will be paid to participatory methodologies, and visual techniques, for transdisciplinary approaches.

We will answer the following questions:

- What are the potentials of artistic methods in the study of the relationship between nature and society?

 - What tools are available today to initiate a co-creation process combining art and science?

2. Artistic and creative approaches to enhance it and disseminate scientific knowledge

We are interested here in new tools for disseminating, communicating and promoting the results of scientific research to different audiences, particularly students. Researchers and practitioners will be able to present non-conventional tools or experiences to raise awareness, and/or to challenge society around their research results, and will present the impacts of their actions. Particular attention will be paid to artistic and creative exhibitions, performances that take over the public space, and visual techniques.

We will answer the following questions:

- Can art be a relevant medium for new alliances between science and society?

- What are the impacts of artistic tools or media on the audiences concerned and on the researchers' viewpoint?

Formats

We welcome contributions in various forms, according to the two themes of the conference: artistic and creative methods (1) for the conduct of research; (2) for the promotion and dissemination of scientific knowledge.

  • INTERACTIVE PARALLEL SESSIONS: These sessions will provide participants with the necessary space to present their work in 15 minutes. These sessions will be moderated using different methods based on reverse pedagogy and collective intelligence approaches.

  • PRACTICAL SESSIONS: These sessions will expose and transmit the key aspects of a research method associated with or inspired by an artistic practice (theatre, video, photography, pictorial art...) We welcome a variety of formats, such as role plays, design workshops, narrative workshops, etc. You have a time slot of one and a half hours, which you can use as you wish.

  • EXHIBITIONS: a space will be dedicated to exhibit artistic creations related to a non-conventional research process: visual or sound works, installations, performances, which can be accompanied by information material, posters.

  • OUT OF WALL SESSION: This will be an opportunity to leave the "academic" space to experiment with ways of challenging citizens on science subjects, or to explore their senses and creativity through practice, in the streets of the city of Montpellier.
